Grizzly bear highways

Wherever you find grizzly bears, you will most likely find bear trails.  The picture on the left shows a trail marked out of individual footprints through the grass in Hallo Bay.  It is a common practice of bears to step in each other's footprints.  Bear's paws have scent glands, and their footprints leave a scent trail.  By stepping ontop of a previous bear's tracks, a grizzly bear can place her scent ontop of the previous walker.  Hundreds of years of footprints on top of footprints carve paths through the meadows and forests where grizzly bears live.
